Universal Orlando Will Drop Health Plans for Part-Time Workers

Universal Orlando is going to stop offering health insurance to part-time employees as of December 31, 2013. Universal is currently offering health plans that are considered to be inadequate according to the regulations in the Affordable Care Act, which goes into affect on January 1, 2014. Universal is one of the largest employers in Central Florida. It has about 17,000 employees. Although thousands of the workers are part-time, only around 500 of them are currently enrolled in the employer sponsored health insurance plan. Other part-time workers are covered under their spouse’s health plan. Still others, who are between the ages … Continue reading

Can You Save Money with Generic Drugs

You can save up to 80 percent off the cost of a prescription drug when you opt to get the generic version instead of the name brand version. Minimally, you should save at least 30 percent with a generic drug. Why Do Generic Drugs Cost Less Most, but not all, common prescription medication has a generic counterpart available for you that is much less expensive. The reason behind the lower cost is mostly because the maker of the generic drug did not have to develop the drug from scratch, do the testing and bring the drug to the market. Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pills?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has proposed a new idea. They say oral contraceptives should be made available over-the-counter without the need for a prescription. How would this affect your health insurance coverage? In August of 2011, the Affordable Care Act was expanded to include the coverage of women’s preventative health services. This means that all health insurance plans must cover the cost of those services, including all FDA approved forms of contraception, without charging a co-pay or deductible. All health plans, whether they are individual or an employer sponsored health plan, must cover birth control in this … Continue reading

Considering Your Spouse’s Point of View

The difference between knowing and really knowing, or feeling, something is amazing. I’m the first person to tell others that a key to any relationship, but especially a marriage, is trying to think from the other person’s point of view. It’s absolutely essential in a marriage, because we are spending the rest of our lives living with this person. The more we try to understand how our spouse thinks, the better off we’ll be. I know this, and yet it’s so hard for me to act on it. For example: once in a while my husband has to work the … Continue reading

Keeping Kids Humble

We have a saying around our home: “Miracles do happen… to other people.” Okay, so it’s not featured on a needlepoint canvas and displayed in a wood frame in our entryway, but I’m pretty sure I utter the phrase at least seven to ten times a day. In fact, I just said it again a little while ago. ABC News just ran a story of a New York teen who hit it big on a $2 scratch-off lottery ticket. Eighteen-year-old Robert Salo is one very, very lucky kid. The teen scored a million bucks just days before his high school … Continue reading

University Health Insurance Plans Getting More Expensive

College tuition seems to go up every semester. We all know that the books that are required for classes at universities are expensive. The price of the student health insurance is about to increase. This is part of the Affordable Care Act, and it is to ensure that those policies will actually cover things that they are supposed to. Have you heard of mini-med health insurance? These types of plans have been referred to as “junk health insurance”. A mini-med plan will cover very little of a person’s health care needs, because of the incredibly low caps that the plans … Continue reading

Why Mini-Med Plans Are Still Around

Mini-med health insurance plans were the subject of much controversy in 2010. These health insurance plans were, and still are, the only health insurance plan that many of the largest corporations were offering to their employees. The plans come with caps that are unreasonably low, and the plans do not meet the 80% requirement that health insurance companies are now expected to meet. So, why are these horrible mini-med insurance plans still around? Mini-med insurance plans have been referred to as “junk health insurance”. These plans cover very little of a person’s health care needs, because the of the incredibly … Continue reading
