When Glass Breaks

For as long as there has been the beauty and functional purpose for glass--there has also been the sad moments when glass breaks. I know I have suffered my own fair share of shattered glittering glass.

When I was six-years old I remember the handle bar of my bicycle going through the plate-glass living room window. It was a very sad accident and one I will remember for the rest of my life. It seemed like such a huge window when I was just a little girl.

A few winters back my husband was warming his little Ford-Escort up on a very frosty morning. Wanting to be helpful our niece went outside to help scrape the windows. She hardly even made contact with the rear-hatch-back window when the whole thing snapped and shattered.

Storefront windows are often subject to breakage from all kinds of risks. From prankster vandalism to the storms that blow in. The costs of replacing broken glass can be huge when the window is as big as some of the store fronts are.

As long as there has been glass there has been broken glass. Individuals and business owners have a real need to insure themselves against the loss of broken glass. The insurance industry has always offered excellent glass insurance products. Many homeowners can "buy back" their glass deductible meaning when there is a broken window they may have no deductible. The same is true for a variety of auto insurance policies where the insured can opt to pay a little more in order to purchase glass coverage with no deductible or a very low one. Business may want to purchase comprehensive glass insurance coverage.

Glass insurance can be a good deal when it's needed. Glass insurance is generally "all-risk" coverage with exclusions of war and fire. I personally carry higher deductibles for my auto comprehensive and collision coverage and apply the savings from my higher deductibles to purchasing full glass coverage. We do the same for our homeowner insurance because there really is nothing worse then broken glass and the draft caused by a broken window.
