Letters from the Homeowners Insurance Company

This all started with a puddle on the floor. Since then, my husband and I have been going through the claims process with our homeowners insurance company. Overall, things are going much easier than I ever expected they would. Here is the next step in the process. Today, we received three, separate, envelopes in the mail from the insurance company that we have our homeowners policy through. Oddly enough, the mail arrived as the claims adjuster was at our home, doing his job. I’ll go over that portion of the claims process in another blog. For now, I wanted to … Continue reading

The Claims Adjuster Called About the Puddle on the Floor

This all started with a puddle on the floor. It was in the corner of a room, and not under a window. My best guess was that the water came in through the wall while it was raining really hard outside. Our next step, as we work through the claims process, is for the claims adjuster to come over and take a look at things. If you haven’t been following my blogging about the puddle on the floor, allow me to quickly catch you up. First, I noticed a puddle on the floor in the corner of a bedroom that … Continue reading

Fungus Eats A House – SafeCo Insurance Won’t Cover It

This might be the absolute strangest homeowners insurance claim that I have ever heard of! A rare form of fungus devoured a house that was located in California. The couple who owned it filed a claim to their insurance company. At first, SafeCo said they would cover it, but, after the repairs were made, SafeCo pretty much changed its mind about that. There is a strange fungus that actually can eat wood. It is called Poria incrassata, and it is triggered by water. This fungus is voracious and is quite capable of devouring an entire house a short amount of … Continue reading

Avoid Facebook After Filing An Insurance Claim

One should always take a moment to think before posting something online. This is especially true if you are about to post something that can be easily accessed and read by anyone who happens to find it. If you have filed an insurance claim, be careful what you post in any form of social media. Your insurance company could be reading it, and potentially using it against you! There is something about social media that makes people decide to post information that they normally would not share with a random stranger. Most people don’t really care what you had for … Continue reading

When the Insurance Check is Sent to the Mortgage Company

Back in August (see article) I wrote about the fact that we had hail damage we could not see and fortunately called the insurance company just in case because there had been a hail storm. I mentioned that we had been approved for repairs and wroud get our roof and gutters replaced shortly. It’s now November. We are finally getting the roof replaced this week. What took so long? Well, the insurance check was sent to the Mortgage company. After the insurance company adjuster came, we received a letter within two days detailing the repairs to be made. We took … Continue reading

Are You Afraid to Call the Insurance Company

Are you afraid to call the insurance company because you don’t want to upset them or your premiums. When it comes to car accidents where you are at fault, the fear is understandable. What about the insurance company for your home? Do you try to fix things yourself that the insurance would cover? I am guilty of this too. But what are we paying insurance for anyway? We had hail storms two months ago where I live and I have been noticing one by one everyone in my neighborhood getting their roofs replaced. I remembered the sound of the storm … Continue reading
