Recently, the Obama administration allowed religious affiliated businesses to be exempt from having to cover the cost of birth control in their employer sponsored health insurance plans. It has since become clear that some religious affiliated businesses are self-insured. This could be a problem. The Obama administration has released a clarification on the rules regarding the birth control mandate. It is the portion of the Affordable Care Act that requires health plans to cover contraception. Obama Administration Responds to Belmont Abbey College Lawsuit

The controversy over birth control coverage in health insurance has led to more than one lawsuit. Recently, Belmont Abbey College sued the federal government because the college felt that the new rules regarding contraceptive coverage violate their religious teachings. The Obama administration has now responded to to this lawsuit. In November of 2011, Belmont Abbey College, in North Carolina, filed a lawsuit against the federal government. The college was founded by Benedictine monks, and is a Catholic college.
