“Dads Don’t Babysit” Shirt Sparks Conversation

There are certain stereotypes about parenting that persist despite the fact that the world has changed. One of them is the concept that dads are not able to take care of their own children. One dad has gotten so fed-up about being called a “babysitter” that he has created a t-shirt designed to crush that stereotype. Al Ferguson is a British writer who is the founder of the Dad Network. It is a blog dedicated to the art of modern fatherhood. It is an online hub and support network for dads. You might be familiar with “mommy blogs” – but … Continue reading

Stay at Home Dads are Worth A Lot!

Over the years, the role of a father in family life has changed considerably. Traditionally, dads went to work while moms stayed home with the kids. Now, however, stay at home dads have become more common, and more accepted. Have you ever wondered what those dads would earn if you accounted for all the work they do at home? Life insurance is designed to give your family some financial assistance after you have passed away. People understand that their life insurance policy needs to be enough to cover the salary of the spouse that the policy is for. Most people … Continue reading

Should Your Husband Stay at Home and be the Caregiver?

Before a couple sets in and decides who is and who is not going to stay at home with the children. There are some things that they should consider. This is especially true before the wife puts it upon the husband to stay home and be the caregiver. In a previous article, I discussed the coming trend of men staying at home. However, before you call your husband’s boss and say that he quits, there are some issues to ponder. First, is it reasonable? Can either of you afford to quit your job? Pull out the calculator and do the … Continue reading

Moms & Dads: Lighten the Load

Whether you have one child or five children (hi Valorie!) you know that stress is an unavoidable part of your life. Whether you work out of the home, inside the home or focus on being a stay at home mom or dad who runs the household – or you are some combination of all of these (and isn’t that exactly what the working parent is?) – then you know that stress can become so burdensome that you feel like you are drowning in it. We’ve talked about making to do lists and writing them down in a priority order and … Continue reading

The Origin of Fathers Day

Yesterday was Fathers Day, and as we were celebrating Fathers Day this weekend I realized that I did not know anything about the origins of the holiday. Of course once I realized this, I could not just let it pass without finding out how Fathers Day started. What I discovered was that it all began in 1909 when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a sermon on Mothers Day. Her mother had died during childbirth and her father, a Civil War Veteran, raised Sonora and her five brothers and sisters on his own after her death. Sonora … Continue reading

Moms Sacrifice for Kids During the Holidays

In other news… the sky is blue and snow is white. For days I have resisted responding to the now infamous New York Times article, “To Buy Children’s Gifts, Mothers Do Without.” But the brouhaha that has followed its printing has become so phenomenal I figured I might as well add my two-cents worth. As you can imagine the article with the extremely trite title received a backlash of vicious replies from mothers around the world. “To Buy Children’s Gifts, Mothers Do Without.” DUH!! When don’t mothers do without? Before I continue on my soapbox I should note that the … Continue reading

Yentl (1983)

“Yentl” is one of the most deeply touching films I’ve ever seen. I saw it for the first time when I was about ten, and the memory of it stayed with me until I saw it again, years later. Barbra Streisand truly shines in this role. Her name is Yentl, and she’s the daughter of a rabbi. Women are forbidden to study the Talmud, but she badly yearns to have the religious education of her father and his students. At night, she draws the blinds and her father (Nehemiah Persoff) teaches her the sacred words of the book, knowing that … Continue reading

11,000 Steps A Day

Hey Moms and Dads, are you doing the 10,000 steps a day program to maintain your fitness? You might consider buying a pedometer for your kids because according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, boys should be taking at least 11,000 steps a day and girls should be taking 13,000. Easier Said Than Done Why do they want kids taking that many steps? Simple, they are doing studies and they found in their sampling of 709 kids, that 30 to 40% of those not getting that many steps a day were overweight. Overweight kids are a big deal in our … Continue reading

Living on One Paycheck

It takes some creativity and thoughtful budgeting in order to live on one paycheck these days. It seems like it is getting harder and harder for families to do. Most people think of the financial disadvantages to having a parent stay at home with the children. Still, as a stay-at-home mother myself, I have learned that living on one paycheck can have its financial advantages, and being able to stay home can even save you money if you are frugal enough. This article is not to convince anyone to quit their career to stay at home. Obviously, not every mother … Continue reading
