In the History of Lloyd’s of London Blog I wrote about how the underwriting syndicate started in the coffee house of Edward Lloyd during the late 1600’s. Today Lloyd’s is well known as the insurance market where anything can be covered for the right premiums. It’s not completely fact that Lloyd’s will insure anything, but they will consider unusual assets and greater risks. Surplus lines insurance markets are needed to provide alternatives for unusual or higher risk insurance not offered by licensed insurers or insurance companies in the state a customer lives. When a customer isn’t able to find insurance coverage from licensed companies, the surplus lines market provides a choice and flexibility. A Link Between Alzheimer’s and Glaucoma

British researchers have discovered common protein fragments in people with Alzheimer’s disease and people with glaucoma. This discovery may change how both diseases are treated. These protein fragments are called amyloid-beta. In people with Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid beta fragments form plaques in the brain. In people with glaucoma, amyloid beta fragments seem to cause the death of cells in the retina. The University College of London study focused on testing drugs that blocked pathways normally traveled by the amyloid beta fragments.
