Scary Places: The Myrtle Plantation

When you think of a southern plantation, you may think of women in white dresses and bonnets, gentleman farmers, and sweet tea, but do you think of ghosts? If you don’t, you might want to visit the Myrtle Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the plantation is currently a bed and breakfast, but it may not be for the faint of heart. It is known as one of the most haunted homes in America. The plantation dates all the way back to 1796 when it was built by General David Bradford, only he … Continue reading

How Carefully Do You Monitor Your Children?

Much has been made of the differences between overprotective parents, who keep their kids under lock, key and surveillance, and those moms and dads rearing free-range kids who are allowed to roam the world unsupervised. Personally, I don’t fit in either camp. I don’t insist that my child travel with security detail, but I am a stickler for helmet-wearing and I’m not afraid to hover from time to time. Regardless of which camp you find yourself in, you have to wonder if parents can ever get it right after learning about the tragic accident involving two Long Island teens. I … Continue reading

Pay As You Drive Car Insurance?

When an insurance company tries to figure out what to charge you for your car insurance premiums, they look at many different specific factors. The bigger a risk you appear to be, the more money they will charge you on your monthly premiums. Now, however, there is a new idea. What if you could pay as you drive, instead? Car insurance covers you for many different things. If you get into a car accident, your car insurance policy can cover the cost of treating the people who were hurt in an accident. This includes the people who were in your … Continue reading

My Car Died, But That Is Okay!

Today, my husband and I were all set to go visit our insurance agent. We planned to talk about life insurance, and sign some papers. At least, that was our plan this afternoon. It turned out, however, that my car died, which instantly changed our plans. We got into the car, closed the doors, and put on our seat belts. I put the key in the ignition, and turned it, but the engine wouldn’t turn. Unexpectedly, the car made this weak, pathetic, almost coughing sound, as if it was trying to clear it’s throat, and was failing at the attempt. … Continue reading

Is It Okay To Be Angry With God? – part 2

In my last blog we looked at the question, is it okay to be angry with God? We looked at some Old Testament characters that were angry. Today we’ll look at some people from the New Testament. When we come to the New Testament and the sisters Mary and Martha, we find, in concern for their brother when he was sick, they sent to Jesus to come and help, John 11:3. Instead of immediately rushing to their aid, even though he loved this family, Jesus delayed another two days before setting out, John 11.6. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus … Continue reading

Genuine concern exists for parents about the weight of their children. We hear a news story every single day about childhood obesity. We hear about what we need to be afraid of and in some cases, what we need to do as parents to protect our children. Today, I want to talk about some of the myths associated with overweight children. Childhood Obesity Needs a Quick Fix It would be nice if there were an instant fix to all fitness issues, especially obesity. It would be great if there were a fast answer for us much less our children. It’s … Continue reading

Who Are We to Judge?

The death of a child elicits sympathy as much as it does gossip, especially if you live in a small town. Unfortunately, in many cases, that gossip begets judgmental finger pointing, and more often than not, the loss of a young life gets overshadowed by rampant speculation and vicious accusations. That’s exactly what’s taking place in a tiny town not far from my rural Wisconsin home. Last night, an innocent 2-year-old girl died after ingesting an unknown amount of gasoline. Meanwhile, her 4-year-old brother is currently fighting for his life after swallowing the same gas that killed his sister. According … Continue reading

Star with Surprising Pasts

Everyone has a story or so Jon Favreau said in Swingers. Celebrities are no different, but some have pasts you may find hard to believe. In my last pop culture blog, I wrote about celebrities who tried to pass themselves off as Native Americans when they weren’t. Today, I am going to talk about celebrities that don’t try to hide from their past, but you just might find it interesting. First of all, there are the preacher’s kids. You might have heard that Katy Perry’s father is a preacher after there was a lot of press about both her parent’s … Continue reading

Things To Know Before You Get Towed

It can be frustrating to have to wait around for your car to be towed. A lot of people are so happy to see a tow truck arrive that they fail to take some necessary precautions that could save them a lot of money, and a lot of trouble. The National Insurance Crime Bureau, or NCIB, has started a campaign to educate consumers about how to avoid getting scammed by bad towing companies. These tips from the NICB are designed to help consumers avoid getting taken advantage of by towing companies, vehicle storage companies, and repair shops that are charging … Continue reading
