Preparing for Pet Emergencies

When I prepared my house for Hurricane Irene last year I gathered all of the essential supplies. I had a plan for how to evacuate with my pets in case it was necessary, although I really didn’t think the flooding would get that bad in my area. Still, I was prepared. Another thing I did while I still had my power and access to the Internet was to make sure that I had the local emergency veterinary services number written down. We all know what number to dial when we have a human medical emergency, but do we have that … Continue reading

Seasonal Firefighters Lack Health Insurance

The firefighters who are battling the fires in Colorado right now don’t have health insurance coverage. They are considered to be seasonal workers, which means that they don’t qualify for federal employer sponsored health insurance. Lack of health insurance coverage can bankrupt families. Firefighters are modern day superheroes. They rush in to smoke filled areas and homes, and battle large fires. They do this to protect the lives of people who often are complete strangers to them. They risk their own lives in order to protect the homes and natural resources that are threatened by a forest fire. Seasonal firefighters … Continue reading

This experimental program was launched in nine metropolitan areas. Taking Pets to Nursing Homes

Life as a blogger can be lonely. I spend a lot of time alone in my house. Sure, I have three pets, but when I start carrying on actual half-conversations with my dog or my cats, then I know perhaps it’s time to get out a bit more. That’s why I started volunteering so much in my area. I visit various organizations multiple times a week, the local rescue included, to get out and interact with people. The very first group with which I looked into volunteering when I first moved to my area three years ago was Pets on … Continue reading

University of Pennsylvania Extends Insurance Coverage

The University of Pennsylvania, or Penn, has decided to extend their employer sponsored health insurance benefits to include coverage for gender reassignment surgery. This decision puts Penn among the schools who offer this type of coverage to their faculty and staff. A standard health insurance plan probably does not specifically cover the type of health care that a person who is transgendered might require. Triadic treatment includes sex reassignment surgery, hormone therapy, and mental health care. A person who requires triadic treatment is going to find it difficult to afford if it is not covered by their health insurance. Recently, … Continue reading

Health Insurance Extended to Domestic Partners in Louisville

The Metro Government in Louisville, Kentucky, has decided to extend health insurance coverage to the domestic partners of city employees. This decision was made, in part, so the government would stay competitive with companies that already were offering health benefits for domestic partners. Right now, the majority of Americans who have health insurance coverage are able to afford it because it comes from their employer. Companies that want to attract the most qualified, best skilled, hardest working employees are going to have to find a way to compete with rival companies for the attention of those potential employees. One way … Continue reading
