107 People Charged with Medicare Fraud in Latest Crackdown

Federal officials in Washington just finished what they are calling a “nationwide takedown” of medical professionals who have been charged with Medicare fraud. This time, 107 people have been accused of fraudulently billing Medicare for a total of almost half a billion dollars. This is the latest effort to reduce Medicare fraud in order to keep the cost of Medicare manageable. In September of 2011, the federal government strengthened the insurance fraud laws. Increased Competition Reduces Medicare Fraud

A pilot program that has been going on for a year has resulted in $200 million in savings for Medicare. It started in nine cities, and will be expanded soon. The experiment showed that competitive bidding for personal medical equipment led to savings for Medicare. This is good news for consumers. This experimental program was launched in nine metropolitan areas. Federal Investigators Increase Anti-Fraud Efforts

Federal investigators recently did the biggest takedown in Medicare task force history. They charged nearly 100 people in eight different cities with attempting to fraud the Medicare program. Part of the health care reform laws include stronger anti-fraud laws. The Obama administration has enacted many changes on health care reform.
