In the news lately, there have been some companies that openly stated that they will not be offering their workers an employer sponsored ealth plan. Swiss Required to Buy Health Insurance Since 1996

The individual mandate is, by far, the most complained about portion of the Affordable Care Act. As I write this blog, we are waiting to hear the Supreme Court’s ruling about it. Conversely, the Swiss government has required people to purchase health insurance since 1996. You probably haven’t heard about that, though, because the Swiss didn’t get outraged about it. In 1996, the Swiss government created federal laws that were designed to control the costs of health insurance and to ensure equitable coverage for everyone. One of the requirements that went into affect made all Swiss residents purchase health insurance … Continue reading

Seasonal Firefighters Lack Health Insurance

The firefighters who are battling the fires in Colorado right now don’t have health insurance coverage. They are considered to be seasonal workers, which means that they don’t qualify for federal employer sponsored health insurance. Lack of health insurance coverage can bankrupt families. Firefighters are modern day superheroes. They rush in to smoke filled areas and homes, and battle large fires. They do this to protect the lives of people who often are complete strangers to them. They risk their own lives in order to protect the homes and natural resources that are threatened by a forest fire. Seasonal firefighters … Continue reading

This is one situation where employers are ahead of the health insurance laws. The Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, was passed in 1996 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. It legally defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. DOMA has been challenged many times. Right now, there are a few states that do recognize same-sex marriage. University of Pennsylvania Extends Insurance Coverage

The University of Pennsylvania, or Penn, has decided to extend their employer sponsored health insurance benefits to include coverage for gender reassignment surgery. This decision puts Penn among the schools who offer this type of coverage to their faculty and staff. A standard health insurance plan probably does not specifically cover the type of health care that a person who is transgendered might require. Triadic treatment includes sex reassignment surgery, hormone therapy, and mental health care. A person who requires triadic treatment is going to find it difficult to afford if it is not covered by their health insurance. Recently, … Continue reading
