All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Insurance

Spring is just around the corner and last week I wrote a Blog about Personal Watercraft, or small boats. The other thing families seem to be attracted to adding as a toy are All Terrain Vehicle's otherwise known as an ATV. Useful, fun and wonderful way to spend a weekend ATV's are loved by families, ranchers, hunters, beach safety, and trail riders all over the country.

In some cases, a Homeowner Policy might offer some coverage for an ATV that is used only on your own private property. But, most Homeowner policies will not cover if it's used off your private property. In many states ATV insurance is required for vehicles operated on state-owned land. ATV insurance is generally in the same category as Motorcycle insurance.

ATV insurance can protect your investment, and liability.

• Even if you didn't think the hill was as steep as it turned out to be, or
• The family was having so much fun until the sudden drop came and everyone piled up in the middle of the creek.

Anyone with an ATV needs insurance to protect against the unique dangers faced while enjoying time on the back of an ATV. It's important to insure an ATV especially if you or your family members ride it on public property.

There are several things that affect the insurance rates for ATV insurance. It's important to remember that the standard things apply for ATV coverage as do for most motor vehicle insurance policies. A few things can affect the rates you might pay:

• Driving history if there are violations on any of the drivers records of claims on your policy then the rates will be higher.
• Some ATV's cost more to insure. The ones with a higher displacement, or those considered as aggressive machines, will generally cost more to insure. This is usually based on the history of claims for the type of vehicles or ATV that is insured.
• Some insurance companies offer discounts based on the "experience" of the drivers both in the number of years of actual driving, and for special classes or training the driver takes.

From experienced riders to beginners, there is usually a policy for just about anyone. When your family decides to add an ATV to the toy box--be sure to contact your Insurance Agent or Company and get the right kind of insurance to meet your needs. There are usually several coverage options for ATV insurance policies. But, it's important to protect your personal liability and medical then add insurance for:

• Collision
• Theft
• Vandalism
• Damage caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers
